When COVID-19 hit the American economy and forced businesses to shutter in 2020, executive recruiter Kristy Hurt—like so many professionals—found herself on shaky ground.

"A lot of companies weren’t hiring, especially earlier in the pandemic," she said.

But for Hurt, waiting and worrying didn’t feel like a viable option. So instead, she took her talent for connecting people and made it virtual. Hurt founded the Co-Lab, an online networking group that was originally aimed at the luxury industry—particularly fashion, beauty, and wellness brands.

In the Co-Lab, which has expanded to include anyone in the consumer brand space, new members join a busy Slack channel where active conversations are buzzing about everything from mentorship to job postings and organized by everything from career stage to area of expertise. A Q&A intake form allows the Co-Lab team to introduce each new professional to the group—and as membership grew, a co-lab colleague realized the responses she was collecting were invaluable.

One question, in particular, became the foundation for a project Hurt had been dreaming about for quite some time: "What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?"

Hurt said she had always wanted to publish a book, and the Co-Lab's members helped her see that the influx of insightful career advice could be compelling content. So, with input from the Co-Lab’s members, she put together a team and got to work—and the results are beautiful.

The book, called Collaborate: Career Advice from the Co-Lab, is printed on luxurious Mohawk Superfine Eggshell Ultrawhite 100T (Beautiful Collection) and wrapped in a pastel blue cloth cover with white foil stamping. Its chic, minimal page design features member pictures, rendered in black and white, beside their best career advice in splashy typography. Light blue accents in the type match the timeless cover.

The finished volume is hefty and would look right at home on a styled coffee table. Created in partnership with bespoke print consultancy Tocci Made, Hurt said she loves how inviting and approachable the book is. It can be read straight through in one sitting, or picked up anytime for a quick burst of inspiration.

Plus, Hurt said, the people featured in Collaborate mostly aren’t household names—and that’s what makes it so special. "They’re real, inspiring stories that feel attainable," she said. "There’s so much to discover about each person. You just get curious."

Hurt said she looked at a range of publishing options, but in the end, her vision exceeded what she could create with consumer-level self-publishing services. She and her design team selected Mohawk Superfine Eggshell for its high-touch impact and alluring tactility, and for its printability. Print consultant Tocci said rendering black and white images in digital print requires more fine-tuning than printing offset, but the small run size necessitated a digital approach—and a rich, consistent paper stock.

The final product was a hit in the Co-Lab and beyond. Luxury clothing brand Veronica Beard, which caters to chic professional women, co-hosted a launch event and published an interview with Hurt on their site as part of their #MakeItHappen feature.

"I really wanted it to be beautiful," Hurt said of the book. "That was important to me."
